Guillaume - It's like one of those sessions in the office in the old days. Except there's no Uncle and no Helmut. Just Rut and Christel and the boys. Uli, waiting with gun in holster and corkscrew in hand. The Chief and me. Also one or two old friends who emerge from Willy's Norwegian past as the long northern twilight wears on.

Brandt Willy Brandt isn't the only person I was when I was here in Norway in the thirties. I was also Willy Flamme. I was Karl Martin. I was Felix Franke. Each of them writing articles for a different paper, each of them with a slightly different viewpoint. You must learn English, Günter, and read Walt Whitman. 'Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes.'

Guillaume Your first experience of presiding over a Cabinet, Chief.

Brandt I must have been rather better at it then. I don't recall any major splits or betrayals. What about you? Being our good familiar Günter Guillaume can't have exhausted all your possibilities.

Guillaume Only name I've ever had.

Brandt People kept taking me for a spy. Not something anyone's ever accused you of?

Guillaume Being a spy? No.

Brandt The Norwegians thought I was spying for the Finns. The Swedes arrested me for spying for the Russians.

Guillaume Can't see you as a spy.

Brandt No?

Guillaume Too noticeable. Too, if I may say so, Chief, secretive.

Brandt I knew all the tricks of the trade. Learnt them when I was on the run from the Gestapo. Suitcases with false bottoms. Invisible ink.

Guillaume Invisible ink? You have actually written messages in invisible ink?

Brandt Useful training. It's what politicians do all the time. No, I could have been a spy, Günter. Might be one, for all you know. Might be spying now.

Guillaume - And for a moment I wonder . . .

Kretschmann — Wonder what?

Guillaume - Nothing. Ridiculous. The Chief could no more spy than fly.

Brandt All right, it's 1936. Yes? For six months I'm back in Nazi Germany. In Berlin, working underground for the party. Who am I? Willy Brandt? Obviously not. Willy Flamme - Karl Martin - Felix Franke? No - I'm not even a German . . . May I introduce myself? My name is Gunnar Gaasland. I was born and brought up in Oslo, as I'm afraid is only too clear from my accent! A very exciting time to be in Berlin, and to see all the wonderful new political developments here!

Guillaume I believe you, Chief. Gunnar Gaasland, from Oslo!
