Brandt Midnight, and a rather different Herr Guillaume begins to emerge. Something of a romantic, this one.
Guillaume You know there's something you and I have got in common, Herr Chancellor?
Brandt So, every Sunday morning. You and Pierre.
Guillaume That's what I live for. Sunday mornings. Fetching the papers with Pierre.
Kretschmann - You're not falling for him, like all the others?
Guillaume - He listens! That's his trick. He listens to what other people say. Anyway, how can you see into someone's heart if you don't fall a little in love with them? And suddenly, out of nowhere, I hear my own voice speaking. - Herr Chancellor, you asked me once if you could trust them. The East Germans . . .
Brandt You were in two minds, I recall.
Guillaume - Midnight. No one but him and me, talking quietly together . . . - We have to trust each other, Herr Chancellor. There's no other way we can live.
Brandt Thank you.
Guillaume - Yes?
Kretschmann - If you got away with it.
Guillaume - I trusted him. And he trusts me. Then two days later . . . it's over.
Kretschmann - Over? What's over?
Guillaume - Everything! The whole project! The whole adventure!
Ehmke (with Wilke and Guillaume) We're out! We're done for! There's no way we can win! Motion of no confidence, and five of our own people are going to rat!
Wilke I believe Herr Wehner has turned one of them round again.
Ehmke We're still going to lose. Out goes Willy. Out go all of us. In comes Barzel. In come the Christian Democrats.
Guillaume Out go the Eastern treaties.
Ehmke It's a squalid little procedural swindle. There are people out on the streets right the way across Germany.
Schmidt (with Wehner and Guillaume) It was an accident waiting to happen. You set up a coalition like an egg balanced on the end of a billiard cue and sooner or later you have broken egg over the carpet. Not something that either of us would wish to remind Willy of now, but I have to say to you privately that this is precisely what you and I saw coming. I assume you've got one or two cards up your sleeve?
Wehner Everyone waits for kind Uncle Herbert to do one of his party tricks. Even Number One. Just so long as I do it by magic. Just so long as he doesn't have to see the hidden springs and levers.
Guillaume - Not for me to tell my masters what to do. But you said Mischa wanted me to use my political judgement, yes? My understanding of human psychology? I'll give it you in one word.
Schmidt Money?
Guillaume - Money.
Wehner Is that what they call the stuff?
Guillaume — Crisp crackling Deutschmarks.
Schmidt You'd only need to pay two or three of that lot to abstain.
Guillaume - Nearly two hundred and fifty of them to choose from.
