Sterling leaned forward in her chair, her curiosity piqued by the hatred in Heidi’s voice when she spoke of her twin brother. The woman couldn’t even bear to say his name.

‘So, you knew these people who were coming to your parents’ property looking for Art?’ said Ryder.

‘I knew. I wasn’t going to rat them out to my parents and brothers, though. I would have ended up getting the whole family into trouble. They were having a hard enough time at that point making the station pay for itself. They didn’t need the extra hassle my twin was causing. I was back and forth from school anyway. In the end it got so bad my parents helped him buy the plane and off he went.’

‘The people who used to come to the house, are they still involved in the organisation?’ Ryder asked.

‘Some are.’ She looked at Sterling then. ‘Others have met an unfortunate end.’

Sterling held Heidi’s gaze, refusing to let the other woman intimidate her. She’d been unable to establish any real connection with Heidi at the hotel, always finding her standoffish and surly. Even now, it was difficult to get a read on her personality. She was threatening towards Sterling, venomous towards her twin, while managing to sensibly answer Ryder’s questions.

Eventually, it was Heidi who broke eye contact, focusing her bloodshot eye on the viewing window.

Ryder sat back and gave Sterling the nod, a sign that she could ask a few questions of her own.

Sterling swallowed, the muscles in her throat sore from Heidi’s chokehold. ‘What exactly is your role in the organisation?’ she asked.

Heidi brought her gaze back to Sterling. ‘I’m a distributor. Rod cuts the shit up, and I take it to my suppliers and collect the money. I have my areas. There are others, enforcers and the like, but I’m not giving you names now.’

‘Did your twin ever bring drugs into Khancoban Airport?’

Heidi glared at her, and for several fraught moments Sterling feared she’d gone too far and the woman was going to clam up.

‘I don’t know when he would have done that, he’s never been home,’ Heidi said quietly.

‘So where does Garrett buy the ice then?’ Sterling asked.

‘From a manufacturer, and then he brings it to the compound. All that hunting gear on the car, it’s a cover for what he really does.’

‘Who’s the manufacturer?’

‘I don’t know. I’ve never known.’

Sterling glanced at Ryder. She didn’t have any more questions for now.

‘Okay,’ Ryder said, before pausing for a few seconds. ‘I want to circle back to Art. I understand his involvement back then, and how he managed to get away. But you haven’t told us how you got involved, Heidi, or were you involved from the beginning?’
