Students of history, theology, geography, and political science will find many, many more things in this book that are true. But in the end, the book as a whole is, after all, a work of fiction. At least, I believe it is.
But if we can find truth in fiction, the truth I have tried to write is the spiritual imperative to question and to search for a relationship with God. And further, to know that this relationship does not exclude different relationships that others have established. No faith has a monopoly on God any more than the color red has a more favored position in the spectrum of light from the sun.
Finally, the Golden Rule rests at the spiritual heart of all major religions, a heart frequently ignored by those who preach and claim to practice it The timeless command to love others as you love yourself, to treat others as you would have them treat you, is something that even our limited human minds can grasp, understand, and practice. As the Jewish sage Hillel said, you should love your neighbor as yourself. The rest is just commentary.
