Henry and Oliver often went out riding and they occasionally did a little hunting—although Henry preferred the riding more than the sport. Henry came to know most of the servants in the household by name, and he certainly did sneak into the kitchen sometimes to tease the cook and the maids and taste whatever they were making and offer his candid opinion. He also became comfortable enough to find a couch and take a nap, if he felt so inclined while the family went about their usual routine, seeming more and more to just take his presence there very matter-of-factly, with a complete absence of any formality.

Chit occasionally came with Henry—just as Henry still occasionally joined Chit for other social engagements or recreation. But over time, Chit joined him less and less; he’d become comfortable with other friends and in other households—and he also enjoyed just being at home, because his home and family were actually enjoyable.

Henry came to know Everett better by often stopping to chat with him as he was coming and going. He knew that Everett was very loyal to Amala and would always stand by her in whatever decision she made, but he also knew that Everett liked Henry very much and hoped Amala would choose marriage to him when all was said and done.

For all the reasons that Henry had found to feel comfortable and happy at Willenbrock House, Amala remained the bright star, shining above all else, giving him joy and hope continually. Their opportunities for conversation and spending time together had made them completely comfortable with each other, and the more they became acquainted, the more it seemed inevitable that marriage was the only course for them to take.
