She nodded, leaning the walking sticks against the wood stack and digging through the layers to find her cell. “Shane.”
He raised his brows in question.
“Be careful out there.”
He gave her a grin. “Always am.”
He slipped out and she watched him through the window as he hugged the side of the house. Then he moved at a cautious jog to the Zenko place, splitting his attention between the windows and the ground, presumably looking for more trip wires. He quickly disappeared around the corner of the building.
At the exact moment Shane disappeared from sight, she spotted a guy walking across the dirt driveway in front of the cabin, having obviously come from the Zenko home. She froze as she watched him cut across the yards. Was that Lloyd Zenko? Had he spotted them? Was he escaping?
It didn’t look like his DMV photograph but she couldn’t really see his features. He was tall and wore a thick black jacket, brown knit hat and dark sunglasses. Something about the way he moved seemed familiar. He kept his head bowed as he quickly strode away. The stranger disappeared behind this neighbor’s house. Then she saw Shane giving her the thumbs up through the window.
Damn.
It was Zenko’s truck and she was supposed to call Sloan but Shane obviously hadn’t seen the other man leaving…
She tried to get Shane’s attention but the glass was too dirty and she couldn’t risk making a noise. She stepped out of the woodshed and frantically waved but Shane had disappeared again. He had obviously gone to investigate further.
She pulled out her cell and called Sloan, then hesitated, unsure what to do. The stranger was heading toward the white van. Why would he park there? Was he a neighbor?
Was it Zenko?
The call went to voicemail and she hung up, knowing she had to at least get a photo of the license plate of the white van.
It had started to rain again and the damp seeped further into her bones. She ran across the back yard of the neighbor’s house, praying no one was home. Then she crept along the wooden siding until she reached the corner.
She pulled up the camera app on her phone and began filming as the van reversed onto the road before speeding away, around the corner and out of sight.
She had to tell Shane. Zenko could be escaping… Or it might be a friend or a relative visiting and not wanting to park out front for whatever reason. She still didn’t know what to do but she couldn’t simply hide in the woodshed after this development.
Yael jogged back toward the Zenko cabin when she simultaneously became aware of two things. First, the sight of orange flames visible through the cabin windows, and second, the sound of shattering glass nearby.
Dammit.
