Alex hung up the cell and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’ll take it to the lab for a quick forensics examination and then to the office to run a diagnostics check. We have your prints on file. If they want your DNA, we can supply that tomorrow. I’ll have the machine back to you by morning. I promise.”

“Thanks.” Her voice was small.

Alex walked over and gave her a quick hug. “Mallory says you should come stay at the house.” He looked at Shane. “You can both stay if that’s what Yael wants. We have the room. No one will get to you there.”

Yael sucked in her bottom lip. Shook her head. “I don’t want to bring danger to your family. The baby…”

Alex’s expression turned icy. “Trust me. No one’s getting near my family, Yael. I’m only sorry this bastard seems to have fixated on you.”

“It was my own fault he saw my face.”

“None of this is your fault. We have all underestimated him time after time. That’s not gonna happen again. We’re on a war footing with this psychopath and I won’t stop searching until we have him for sure.”

Yael’s bottom lip wobbled and her eyes filled with tears. Then she blinked them away and raised her chin. “I hate this. I hate him.”

Shane stepped forward and wrapped an arm around her shoulder. He hated seeing her so upset. “I have a place we can stay. He won’t find us there and if he does, he won’t live long enough to regret it.”

“I can keep you both safe,” Alex assured them.

“So can I. I won’t let her out of my sight.”

“Yael?” Alex asked.

Yael stood straighter and drew in a big breath. “I’ll go with Shane. I can’t stand the idea of bringing danger to Georgie.”

“Okay but call if you change your mind.” Alex picked up Yael’s laptop and the power cord and took both items downstairs to bag them.

Shane wasted no more time. He went to her drawers and pulled out underwear and then socks and pants and t-shirts. He found sweaters and jeans and stuffed everything into a sports bag he found in the bottom of her wardrobe.

Sloan’s voice echoed up the stairs. “Is she okay?”

Yael’s eyes shot to his. She was keeping it together but he could see the strain around her eyes and mouth. And she was cold. He dragged a thick gray cardigan off a shelf and wrapped it around her shoulders, pulling her hair out from the collar and ignoring the way the silky tresses brushed against his skin.

Her dark brown eyes were full of fear and uncertainty.
