“I’ll be right there with you, Yael. He’s not getting near you again,” Shane reassured her. Anger fused his jaw. He should never have left her alone in the first place. “Then we’ll go somewhere safe and you can get some sleep.”

Her deep brown eyes locked onto his and he felt a surge of protectiveness when she nodded. “Okay. But I can’t drive. I don’t have my driver’s license.”

Emotion clogged his throat. That she worried about something so trivial should have made him smile but he couldn’t. He wasn’t about to let a traffic cop near her.

She let go of him and clutched her throat. Her eyes went even wider. “My wallet, cellphone, and laptop.” Her voice rose. “What if he took them? You better tell Ashley to change all the passwords, Alex. ASAP, just in case.”

“I will. Let’s take a quick walk around your place and you can see if he took anything,” Alex told her gently. “He left almost as soon as you did, so I doubt it. I’ll deal with everything after that. I’ll arrange to get the windows fixed and the place cleaned up.” Despite the considerate nature of the words there was a light in the man’s eyes that was steely and cold.

Shane had no trouble believing those rumors about Alex Parker now. Shane swept Yael into his arms and waited for Ryan Sullivan to give him the all-clear that it was safe for them to exit.

Shane followed Alex, careful not to knock Yael’s feet against anything. Alex stopped for a quick word with Dominic Sheridan and his partner before they all headed outside.

Shane almost stumbled when he saw the damage to the SUV. Holy fuck. It looked like a full magazine had been emptied into it. He exchanged another glance with Alex. If she hadn’t been driving that vehicle, she’d be dead. His arms tightened around her and he belatedly remembered his cast but it didn’t matter. No way was he letting her go now.

“Sorry about your SUV, Alex,” Yael murmured.

Shit.

“Not your fault. He focused on you because of the work you were doing for the company. Anyway, that’s why we have insurance.”

Shane and Alex shared another look.

“I’ll follow you.” After a nod to the other man Shane strode to his truck and opened the passenger door, easing Yael carefully inside. Then he climbed in the driver’s seat and drew the seat belt around her while she pulled her knees up to her chest.

“I hope you don’t mind me coming to find you. I didn’t know where else to go,” she said quietly.
