Almost immediately Pierce was on a gurney with two FBI agents and an EMT climbing into the back with him. The vehicle sped away, presumably to the nearest trauma center.
Yael released a lungful of air. “Wow, that was over fast.”
“Reminds me of some of my dates.” Laura snorted. “All the buildup and promise of excitement, and over in under twenty seconds flat.”
“You need to date better men,” Alex stated dryly.
Tim sniggered quietly.
Laura laughed. “Most of the best ones are taken, Alex. We single ladies have to make the best of what we can get.”
She looked gleeful though and held her hand up to high five them all. “Good work, guys. You did it. You helped capture him. Now we can all sleep better at night.”
Yael slapped her hand. “You helped too. False modesty does not become you.”
“I’m not the one who figured out his identity, my love. That was all you.” Laura flashed her lashes at Yael and smiled.
The pressure in Yael’s chest eased a little. That had been her and it felt good.
Alex called Ashley Chen who was with the Crisis Negotiation Unit. “You’re sure it’s Pierce? Is he going to make it?” An intent look came over his features. “If he survives, do you plan to keep him down there or bring him back here?” Whatever she told him made his eyes gleam. “Great.”
He hung up. “It’s definitely Pierce. She has no idea of his injuries or prognosis but I hope he survives. One bullet isn’t enough for the likes of him.”
Yael crossed her arms. She couldn’t agree more and yet she’d never enjoyed the idea of retribution. Probably because sometimes innocents got caught in the crossfire.
“Agents are going to secure electronics from his house before the Evidence Response Team gets in there, to courier them back to Quantico with Shane Livingstone. Tomorrow morning we’ll go through them at task force headquarters.”
Yael blew out a massive breath. They’d waited all day to watch this arrest. Alex had worked on this case for well over a year. The fact it was over so suddenly felt anticlimactic and weird.
Laura stood and helped herself to a donut that was left over from the morning. Yael needed to figure out how to instigate a healthy food policy here because no one else ever seemed to gain weight from the overload of carbs, but she stacked on five pounds just looking at it.
Laura wiped sugar off her lips and yawned. “I’m going to call my date and cancel. In case anything comes up that requires my amazing skills or talent.”
