Yael seemed to slump as she gathered up her belongings. Shane lifted the bag from her shoulder without asking and led the way outside. He knew she wouldn’t let him get far with her precious laptop.

Outside it had started to rain. A light mist that soaked everything. His slicker was in the back of his truck and covered in bloodstains.

He needed to call Novak and Jordan and fill them in on more details from tonight’s meeting but there was nothing that couldn’t wait.

He headed over to his truck which was parked beside Yael’s borrowed SUV. “You planning on going anywhere between now and seven o’clock tomorrow morning?”

She shook her head.

He opened his passenger door. “Get in.”

She pulled a face, then reluctantly climbed inside. He closed the door and walked around to the driver’s side.

Neither of them had eaten all day. He started the truck and reversed, looking over his shoulder. “You like Thai food?”

“I’m not sure I can wait that long. I’ll stick a pop tart in the toaster when I get home and then crash.”

A pop tart?

“May as well eat cardboard. It so happens you’re in luck. I ordered online during the meeting. I just need to pick it up.”

She shot him a look. “Did you order enough for two?”

He laughed. “I always order enough for two.”

He drove to the restaurant which, to his mind, made the best Thai food in the state.

He’d made sure he wasn’t followed after leaving the base and left Yael in the locked vehicle and parked directly under the lights outside the restaurant door. Strode inside and grabbed the food. He added a couple of beers to the order. When he got back to the truck, Yael’s eyes were closed. He climbed in and she woke with a start. He said nothing, simply propped the bag at her feet. The smell made his mouth water.

They didn’t speak on the way to her place and tension built.

She waved to the guard and opened the garage door from a remote stashed in her bag. He pulled up beside Myrtle. Jumped out before Yael could do anything and jogged around to her side, held out his hand for the food as she opened the door to climb out.

His broken arm ached and he reluctantly slid the cast into the sling. He hated anything that reminded him of his weakness but he had to admit it had been a hell of a day despite not being on the team. He and Yael had had all the fun whereas Gold team had spent most of the day in transit and then watching an apartment containing nothing more exciting than a sleeping bartender.
