Biondo went still, as though waiting for the decision to be made. “Like I said, I have my code. Now you have to make the choice. Will you let me help you or shoot me and go into this alone?”
“Remy?” Lisa’s voice was closer now.
He was out of time. He couldn’t let her walk in and see Biondo standing there. It would ruin the only advantage they had—surprise. “If you betray me, I’ll never stop hunting you down.”
“Just be ready,” Biondo said. “I’ll make some chaos and you get her out. Run with her. All I ask is when this is done, I want my account number and then she will forget she ever saw it.”
Remy nodded. The last thing he wanted was for her to be in this man’s way. There was something almost arctic in the assassin’s eyes. He damn sure wasn’t going to mention that she wouldn’t be able to forget those numbers. “It’s a deal, but remember who I work for.”
He retreated, blending into the shadows as though they were his natural home. “I do not forget, Mr. Guidry. I have no wish to be on Mr. Taggart’s list. Do not get on mine. Be ready to run.”
He wanted to run right this fucking second. Instead he opened the gun closet and tucked his Colt into the back of his jeans and covered it with a hoodie he did not need. But it seemed better than walking out and letting everyone know he was carrying.
He strode out, his heart thudding in his chest, but he was calm, cool. He had to stay in control for her sake. He nearly knocked into her. “What’s wrong, chèrie?”
Her eyes were wide with fear. “Some men are here and they said I have to go with them.”
“Remy, these men are here to take Lisa into custody and transport her back to Texas. This is Marshal Jones and Marshal Porter.” Armie was in street clothes, a sure sign that they’d gotten him out of bed to deal with this problem. “They say she’s a material witness in a federal case back in Dallas. Do you know anything about that?”
He tangled his fingers in hers, giving her a reassuring squeeze as he faced the men who’d come for her. “Of course we know about the case. Lisa has been cooperating on every level. The last we heard, the prosecutor wasn’t re-trying.”
