“Since I don’t even remember what I supposedly predicted and I don’t know anything about horse racing, I can’t be sure, so you’ll forgive me if I’m not impressed.”

“Mrs. Bates, let me be frank with you. I have never had anyone besides myself receive a message from the spirits during one of my séances.”

Elizabeth felt certain this was true, mainly because nobody could receive a message from the spirits. Before she could think of a suitable response, however, Lucy returned with the tea tray. She had added some tea cakes, Elizabeth was happy to see. Elizabeth served her guest and then herself, which allowed her plenty of time to formulate her reply.

“You said you have never had anyone else receive a message from the spirits, but how do you know that is what happened with me?”

Madame Ophelia smiled benignly. “I know these things, Mrs. Bates. I could see it even before I knew what you said would prove true.”

Elizabeth didn’t believe that for a minute, but she said, “I’m sure I should be flattered, but I’m still mortified.”

“You should not be. The spirits, who know everything, spoke through you. I am the one who is flattered that they chose to do so under my eye. They knew I would take care of you and help you cherish your gift.”

Elizabeth frowned. “My gift?”

“Yes, you have the gift, the second sight. I can see it.”

“How very interesting. And just what does that mean?”

“It means you can speak to the spirits and they to you. It means you have an obligation to use your powers to help others.”

“I can’t imagine how it could help others. The only thing I’ve done so far is help someone win a racing bet, and let me assure you, that is not how I would like to serve mankind.”

“You are new to this. I understand you are frightened.”

“I’m not frightened, just puzzled.”

“Then allow me to answer your questions. I am responsible for you now.”

Elizabeth liked the sound of that, although she didn’t let her guest see it. “How can you be responsible for me? I’m a married woman and I have a husband to look after me.”

“I am responsible for teaching you to manage your talent. The spirits chose me, and I will not fail you.”

Elizabeth allowed herself a skeptical frown. “And exactly how will you do that? By teaching me how to do séances? I assure you I would never do such a thing.”

“You are free to use your power however you wish. My only task is to teach you to use it well.”

“By attending your séances, I suppose,” Elizabeth said. “Is this how you get people to keep coming back time after time?”
