  22. What’s next onyour reading list?

“Yes, but not anything specific. Just blood and just for a second. It could mean anything.”

“It could mean he is going to die,” Persephone cried, not feigning her distress. Could she really care for Jake?

“Or it could mean he is going to cut himself shaving,” Elizabeth insisted reasonably. “I’ve been thinking about it since yesterday, and I’m not even certain that it’s his blood. It could mean anything. Anything at all.”

“And you didn’t see his death?” Persephone asked, still distressed.

“No, nothing like that! I’m so sorry I upset you.”

“But still, you saw something. We need to figure out what it means.”

“Is that really up to us?”

“Someone needs to interpret what the spirits tell us.”

Elizabeth frowned. “Aren’t the spirits usually very clear when they speak? They are during the séances I have attended.”

Persephone waved away this logic. “Your visions are different. They aren’t . . . clear.”

“The one about the horse race seemed very clear, or so I was told,” Elizabeth said with a smile. “And also the one when the spirits told that lady where to find her uncle’s will.”

“But then you saw the accident.”

Elizabeth frowned. “Yes, that was . . . different.”

“Very different,” Persephone confirmed. “For one thing, you remembered what you’d seen in the vision, even a lot of what you saw during the séance.”

Elizabeth couldn’t deny it. That would have been foolish, and it would also have spoiled everything. “I did. I still have nightmares.”

“And now you’ve seen something that concerns Mr. Miller. Don’t you think he should be warned?”

“I did tell him to be careful,” Elizabeth reminded her defensively.

“What good will that do if he doesn’t know what to be careful of?”

Elizabeth shook her head. “I can’t warn him when I have no idea what I’d be warning him against.”

“Then you should sit down with him and see if you get another message, a clearer one this time.”

That did make sense. “You mean, have a séance?”

“Yes, but, uh, you would have to request it.” Plainly, Persephone didn’t have the authority to offer that, which meant Madame Ophelia hadn’t sent her. How interesting.

“Do you think Mr. Miller would participate? I can’t promise I’ll see anything that has to do with him, after all.”

“He is willing to take that chance,” Persephone said. Jake had thoroughly charmed Persephone.

“Even after he found out I predicted that poor man’s death?”

“Especially then. You would be amazed how desperately people long to know their future.”

Elizabeth wouldn’t be amazed at all, as a matter of fact, but she didn’t say so. “Even if the news is bad?”

“No one ever expects the news to be bad.”

“But the blood . . .” Elizabeth gestured helplessly.

“He needs to know so he can protect himself,” Persephone said.
