“You need people like that in your life, Sophie. I’ve been a little worried about you, uprooting yourself, living away from your family and all.”
Sophie eyed him with a raised eyebrow. “You did the same thing when you moved to Charleston.”
“And it wasn’t easy, starting over like that. But I had Ross at least. You’re all alone here. But I’m not worried anymore.” His face softened. “The town’s already in your corner, and the more they get to know you, the more they’ll see how special you are.”
Sophie warmed at his words, falling headlong into his soulful gaze. She wanted to thank him for his kindness, but the words caught in her throat.
“You’ve always been such an encouragement to me, Soph. Always saw the best in me. It’s time someone did the same for you.”
He touched her jaw as if he were handling fragile porcelain. “I’m amazed by you. I always have been. You’re surprised at how your neighbors came through for you today, but that’s exactly what you do for everyone else. You dropped your entire life to take care of your mom and siblings. You gave up a scholarship to a prestigious university—” When she started to speak, he placed his finger over her lips. “I know you were happy to do it, but that doesn’t negate the sacrifice.
“You’re selfless and caring, and you inspire me to be a better person. Consider how you’re going after your dream with everything you’ve got. Literally, every penny you’ve got.” He pinned her with an unswerving look. “Your mom would be so proud of you, Soph. I know I am.”
No one other than her mom had ever said such things to her. She wasn’t even sure how to respond.
His finger slid slowly from her lips, making them tingle with want. His eyes pierced hers. That familiar tension crackled between them. And then he was leaning forward.
He kissed her tenderly, his lips brushing hers with a softness and reverence that melted her heart. He pulled away, his eyes searching hers. He must’ve found what he was looking for because he drew her closer and kissed her again. This time his lips began a soft exploration that narrowed the world, once again, to just the two of them. There was no store, no deadline, just Aiden and his wonderful kisses.
She touched his jaw, the bristles a pleasant scrape against the palm of her hand. She never wanted it to end. Wanted to stay in his arms forever because his embrace felt like home.
Home.
