“I’m in.”
Thankfully, Nate didn’t come up again as they stuffed themselves with barbecue, played a killer game of Scrabble, and lit sparklers in the yard as night fell.
Only as her sisters were getting ready to leave did the conversation shift from lighthearted to serious.
While Eve detoured for a pit stop, Cate cornered her in the kitchen. “I noticed the bid for security cameras tucked beside your toaster. What’s up with that?”
Naturally her detective sister had spotted that document.
“The car keying spooked me.”
“That didn’t happen here.”
“No.” May as well give her a bit more detail. Otherwise Cate would keep up the third degree until she got answers. Besides, if she hemmed and hawed, Eve would come back and begin tag-teaming questions. “But someone did break the buds off my lily plants. I also found a sort of voodoo doll on my back porch a week ago. I thought it was prudent to enhance my security setup.”
Cate frowned. “Why am I just hearing about this?”
“You’re in St. Louis. What would be the point of telling you every tiny detail about my life?”
“Threats aren’t tiny details.”
“They weren’t overt threats.” Even if the news Nate had passed on yesterday after his discussion with Dave Mullins gave credence to that possibility. Especially since the incoming phone number on Tyler’s cell for the vandalism incidents had matched the latest one on Mullins’s burner phone.
“I’m assuming your sheriff is on this?”
“Yes.”
“Any idea who’s behind it?”
“No.” That was true, as far as it went. But she agreed with Nate that BK was probably responsible for the incidents—whoever BK was.
“Watch your back, and keep your Beretta handy.”
“That’s my plan.”
“You ready to hit the road?” Eve appeared from the hallway.
“Yes.” Cate squeezed Grace’s arm. “Let me find my purse.”
While their oldest sister went in search of her bag, Eve strolled over to Grace. “So do you think this sheriff of yours could be The One?”
Grace huffed out a breath. With her sister in the throes of honeymoonitis, it wasn’t surprising she would circle back to that topic. “I met him less than a month ago.”
“I knew Brent was special right away.”
She’d felt the same about Nate. But in case she was wrong, it might be safest not to create expectations.
“For now, all I’ll say is that at the very least, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
“Casablanca.” Cate rejoined them.
“If we’re going to play the classic-movie-lines game, I’ll add this.” Eve put her hand on Grace’s shoulder. “May the Force be with you.”
“Star Wars.” Cate chimed in again. “And remember—a good man is, to paraphrase, the stuff that dreams are made of.”
“The Maltese Falcon.” Eve high-fived Cate. “Although I like your context better.”
“You know what I think?” Grace took their arms and tugged them toward the door. “There’s no place like home—and tomorrow is another day.”
“The Wizard of Oz.” Cate jingled her car keys.
