- Let’s Stay in Touch!

“What about Sumner? Maybe she killed Graham before she went running.”
The thought had occurred to me. “It’s possible, but what’s Sumner’s motive?”
“Money?”
I shrugged. “I assume Graham made a decent salary, and that his year-end bonus was sizeable.” Liz would know better than I. “His children will get half the estate. And the real wealth is with Graham’s parents. Both of whom are still alive. With Graham dead, Sumner will never see a penny of the Landingham fortune.”
Liz looked non-plussed. “Who else has an alibi?”
“Everyone, and no one.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your Perry's alibi, and he’s yours. Would you lie for him?”
She flushed. “I don’t have to lie. We were together. Asleep.”
“Lizzie.” I reached across the table and squeezed her hand. “I don’t think you had anything to do with Graham’s death.” At least I hoped not. “My point is spouses lie for each other.”
“What about the staff?”
“Misty was in the kitchen. Both Bill and I saw her. Her helpers were at the lodge.”
“Randy?”
“I don't know. I'll ask Anarchy. But as far as I know, Randy and Graham never met before this weekend.”
“Buffy! If Bill went fishing, she doesn’t have an alibi.”
“True. Can you think of a reason Buffy would kill Graham?”
“Maybe that thing with Bill that Sumner hinted at. When I found out what Graham did to Perry, I was mad enough to kill him.” She pressed her fingers to her lips. “Not that I did.”
“Of course.”
She held up the bottle. “More wine?”
“One more glass.”
The cabin door opened, and Perry stepped inside. His brows rose when he saw me. "Ellison, good afternoon."
“I’m drinking wine with your wife.”
“Smart. I may drink bourbon while you drink wine.”
“The boat was that bad?” asked Liz.
“Let’s just say murder does not bring out the best in people. Especially when we all suspect each other.”
“Ellison and I have been trading theories.”
He poured bourbon into a juice glass, then perched on the edge of the bed. “Let’s hear them.”
“It seems everyone has a motive.” Liz sounded almost flippant.
“Bill and Fred, too?”
“Yep.” She popped the "p."
“Do tell,” said Perry.
“Ellison?” Liz looked at me expectantly.
“I’m in the dark about Bill. There may be some issue with Fred’s bank.”
They waited for more. When I remained silent, Liz pouted. “That’s it? That’s all you'll tell us?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know much more than that.”
“Buffy has no alibi,” Liz told her husband.
“Buffy’s your suspect?”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” I kept my voice mild.
“I assumed I was suspect number one. Graham was shot with my gun.”
“We don’t know that for sure,” Liz snapped.
“My gun went missing. Graham was shot with a handgun. Ellison found my gun in Fred and Mel's cabin.”
