Near the edge of the mountain stood a maple grove with dead leaves all over the ground. Angelica gathered up the leaves and sat down on them. She took out her dry food and her water bottle, and ate slowly. When she finished eating, she fell asleep contentedly.

Every now and then, someone beside her would ask the same question: “Are you here to see Dr. Lin? Why are you looking for him?”

Angelica gave an impassioned answer to the man’s question. She felt herself becoming eloquent, but she couldn’t hear what she was saying. In this way, passionately and somewhat mysteriously, she explained her motives for coming to Blue Mountain.

“Who are you, please?” she asked, turning to the invisible man.

“Ha-ha, haven’t you figured it out? Who else do you think I could be?”

“Are you Lin—Dr. Lin Baoguang?” she asked hesitantly.

The man made no answer. In fact, Angelica felt that no one was near her, and she was not fully awake. She decided to go back to sleep. For some reason a vague hope rose within her, and she fell asleep with the rising hope.

When she awoke in broad daylight, birds were singing in the trees, and a mountain spring was gurgling to her left. A man was chopping wood not far from her. Angelica jumped up in excitement.

“Good morning. Do you live near here, sir?” Angelica asked loudly.

Wearing a dark-blue work shirt, the man came out of the woods. He looked at her and said, “I live fifteen kilometers from here next to the river. I’m preparing firewood for the old people’s home for the winter. And you? Are you looking for Dr. Lin Baoguang?” he asked with a smile.

“Ah, how did you guess that?”

“People who look like you come in search of the old doctor all the time. But the old doctor has been missing lately. Some people say he is dead, but I feel he is still alive. Have you seen the clinic?”

Angelica was taken aback and looked in the direction he pointed out. Sure enough, she saw a small gray-brick house deep in the woods. This was great! After thinking for a second, she asked uneasily, “Sir, you say people who look like me often come to see Dr. Lin. What do you mean by ‘look like’ me?”

“That’s an interesting question. It’s just my personal feeling. I think you all look alike.”

“I see. Good-bye, sir!”

Angelica walked happily toward the little building.

When she pushed the door open, she smelled herbs. This was one of those houses with a front room and a back room. In the front room were a large table, some chairs, and a filing cabinet. Angelica figured this was an examination room. There was nothing in the back room but an empty wooden bed. When Angelica opened the glass door of the filing cabinet to look at the files, she found that the papers were damp. It seemed that no one had lived here for a long time. Her eyes clouded over, and she couldn’t read the words on the papers. She wondered, There were no herbs in the room, so where did the smell come from? Just then, someone knocked gently on the door. It was the woodcutter.
