“No, it was something.”

Knowing William, those little laughs usually meant he had more to say but because he knew my level of sensitivity, he dared not say anything for fear it would hurt my feelings. This time, I wasn’t letting him off the hook that easily.

“No, William, for real. What are you laughing at? I know my three-week trek seems silly to you, but it’s because you’re a man. You’re on the opposite end of the ratio. Try being on my end and it wouldn’t be so silly. Finding an eligible man is like looking for a needle in a haystack. And at thirty-five, I have consumed enough hay to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. So laugh on. I should’ve stayed and got mugged by the gypsies, tramps, and thieves. At least they weren’t laughing.”

“Come on, Montana, don’t be so sensitive. I’m not laughing because it’s silly. I’m laughing because it’s ironic.”

“What’s ironic?”

“You. You’re a flight attendant, yet you carry around so much baggage all the time. I mean, you’re traveling around the country looking for someone that you claim will help you carry your baggage, but each time I see you, with each different relationship all you do is accumulate more baggage. Have you ever thought that maybe the secret to getting rid of some of your baggage is to stop adding new pieces to the set? Or better yet, when you check the baggage that you have, stop claiming it. Just let it revolve on the carousel until security comes to pick it up.”

“That’s crazy. Why would I want somebody else walking around with my baggage?”
