“Keep eating…you b-bastards.”
And the bright light became an endless darkness.
GRAND OPENING
Sebastian used his tortilla to sop up the rest of the sauce. The best goddamn meal he’d ever had. There was no question about that. He swiveled his head and looked at the new restaurant, a place he would be visiting again.
Manuel’s.
He stood from the table, patted his stomach, left a hefty tip for the waitress. Claudia was her name. A damn pretty Mexican gal.
“Sir, you enjoy the food?” she said, shining that bright smile at him.
“Incredible. You guys will be seeing plenty of me, I can tell you that. My compliments to the chef.”
She smiled. “My husband. Oh…here he is.”
Sebastian followed Claudia’s gaze toward the approaching man. A thick black mustache stood over his grin, twitched a couple of times.
The restaurant was full of smiling customers. They nodded as they chewed and widened their eyes with every bite.
“Another happy customer,” Claudia said, then kissed her husband on the cheek.
“Yes, I’m very impressed.”
The Mexican man shook Sebastian’s outstretched hand. “Thank you, sir. Always my dream to own restaurant.”
“Yes, he loves to cook.”
“Well, I’m glad for it. You’ll be seeing me, friend. Probably sooner than later.”
As Sebastian made for the door, he stopped in his tracks. He turned to face the hugging couple. An older Mexican woman had joined them, her wrinkled fingers gripping the shoulders of a darling little girl.
“You know what…maybe I’ll take a little something to go.”
