“What the actual fuck?” I said, walking toward the gaping door. When I got there, I could see why everyone was so pissed off. The lock had been pried open and the closet had been raided. A lot of the food and bottles of water were gone. I turned back to the people standing in the lobby. “Did anyone see who did this?” I asked.
People shook their heads, or said, “No.”
I stepped back and looked into the raided closet. I punched the door. This had been my responsibility, and I was pissed that it happened at all. But what I was more pissed off about was that someone had come down and taken the things that were for all of us for themself. I was going to find whoever did this, I swore. And when I did they were hoddered.
“Where were the guards when this happened?” I asked, whirling around toward the people in the lobby.
“They were at the door,” Mo spoke up. “Nobody got in last night, that’s not what happened.”
“So it was somebody in the building,” I said. My anger was growing at every word.
“It must have been,” José said.
“Was it that Jesse kid?” I said. Jesse wasn’t around, and that and the fact that I had never trusted the kid was enough for me at the moment to make the accusation.
“Hey,” Sebastian said, angry. “Jesse wouldn’t do this. Jesse’s not an asshole—they’re here to do the right thing by everybody as much as you are. You take that shit right back.”
“Fine, it wasn’t Jesse,” I said grudgingly. I kicked the door again. As I was in the middle of doing it, Jaden came down from the stairwell, walking slowly into the lobby. He saw me kicking the door, saw the people assembled, and got what was happening pretty quickly.
I racked my brain thinking of who would do this. When the answer hit me, it hit me hard and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it immediately.
“Drusilla,” I said.
Everybody looked at each other. José shrugged once and nodded. “Could be,” he said.
The nod spread through the crowd. Jawing started up—no one had seen her down here this morning, she had been trying to get extra provisions for her kids since day one, her door was locked all the time, no one put it past her. The voices rose up, accusatory. For a minute everybody forgot about the hand motions José had introduced and talked over each other in a thunder. We all felt pretty sure.
“Hey, hey,” I heard a voice say. It took me a minute to realize it was Jaden. His hands were held out in front of him, as if he were motioning for a person running right at him to stop. “We don’t know it was her at all. This is all just a guess.”
