To the degree that communal existence became more distasteful to me, I suffered more and more from being emotionally alone. At least, I attributed my suffering to emotional causes. The simplest things irritated me; I thought myself suspect, as if I were already guilty; an idea I could not shake off poisoned all my relationships. I fell ill. It would be more accurate to say that I became increasingly ill; for I always was somewhat ill.
