At that, Olivia glanced at her, and Chase knew that Olivia knew how she’d sounded. “Fine. As long as your dares are not dangerous. I’m not doing something dangerous.”
“Fair enough.” Chase turned up the radio. “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” had just come on. Maybe Olivia would get the hint and lighten up. “I go first. Truth or dare?”
Olivia sighed. “Truth.”
“You’re scared of my dares, aren’t you?”
“That would be correct.”
Chase laughed. “Okay, have you ever faked an orgasm?”
Olivia made a face. “Seriously?”
“You have to tell the truth.”
Olivia rolled her eyes. “Fine. I have faked an orgasm.”
“I knew it,” Chase said, folding her arms and settling back. She didn’t know why this pleased her. She supposed she wanted Olivia to be, like, an actual human.
“Okay, my turn.” Olivia glanced over at her, and something in her perusal caused a flicker of alarm. “Have you ever faked an orgasm?”
“Um, yeah, like, every time.”
Olivia pressed her lips together and then said, “Really. Huh.”
“What do you mean by that? Don’t most women fake orgasms?”
“Some do. I guess both you and I have, but it’s interesting you said every time. Have you not had an orgasm before?” Olivia looked at her with something akin to concern. Which made Chase want to climb from the car. While it was moving.
“Um, it’s not your turn.” Chase knew where this was going, and she wasn’t hitching a ride on that bus. Olivia was a therapist, which meant she liked to dig beneath surfaces. That’s what therapists were—emotional archaeologists, digging around, looking for the truths, searching through old hurts and poking at them with a sharp instrument. Saying things like You can’t heal if we don’t get the yucky stuff out. Well, maybe some things are better left unexplored. “Truth or dare?”
“Dare.”
Chase hadn’t expected that. She figured Olivia would want to stay within the questions. “Awesome. So when we stop for a burger, you have to go up to a random guy and throw your arms around him and say, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe it’s you. I’ve been wanting you to meet your son for years.’ You know, like he’s the father of your child.”
“No. Absolutely not.”
“You have to do it. It’s a dare, and those are the rules.”
Olivia shook her head. “No, because that could be dangerous.”
Chase sighed. “No it’s not. It’s funny.”
“First, germs. Second, that’s emotional abuse. It’s not amusing to make a guy think he has a child as a joke. Why would you think that it was?”
Because guys were mostly jerks who took little responsibility for their actions. And it would be funny. Sort of. Okay, maybe not.
“Fine. When we get to the burger place, you have to do the Meg Ryan orgasm thing while you’re eating your burger.”
“You sure are obsessed with orgasms.” Olivia gave her a flat look.
“Only because I now know you’re good at faking them,” Chase said, laughing.
