Olivia’s mouth twitched before she assumed her normal in-control look. “My grandfather passed away six months ago, and the property belongs to me now. He owned a logging business and has a house on the edge of Cotter’s Creek.”
Chase had overheard Olivia say “cabin” to Conrad, but if her relative had owned a logging company, the place was likely similar to the lodge she’d stayed at in Jackson Hole a few years back. She’d loved the rustic vibe and the hot tub. Mostly because she’d been in it a lot with Tucker Vance, lead guitarist for Suede. Tucker was so hot and such a bad boy, which was the attraction, of course. As a person he was a bit of a douche. She missed the hot tub more than she missed him.
Still, Cotter’s Creek sounded like Hicksville. Foothills? Small town? What in the hell were they going to do there? Couldn’t she find her true self in Malibu? She liked her bedroom with its clean lines and good sheets, and the impersonal bathroom now felt like it belonged to her, which of course it did. But with the bath salts and good conditioner that made her hair silky sitting in the shower, it felt like a home. She didn’t need to go to Cotter’s Creek to learn whatever it was Olivia thought she was going to teach her. Which was probably a bunch of made-up life coach crap.
“I’m hungry. Are we going to stop for lunch?” Chase asked, changing the subject since Olivia didn’t seem to care what she wanted regarding their location for this Square One bullshit.
This is your fault, moron.
She shouldn’t have signed the contract that Olivia had printed off as soon as they’d arrived at the beach house. Chase could have stayed at Cedar Point if she’d insisted. Olivia couldn’t kidnap her. If she’d just toughed it out at Cedar Point for a few more weeks, she would have been back at her apartment, moving on with her life.
But what life would that be?
Ugh, she hated the voice that popped up at the absolute worst time. Miss Voice of Reality should have made an appearance before she snorted that line off the glass-top coffee table and then had sex with Jordan “Say my name” Cokehead. She could have also used it that day in Olivia’s car when she blurted out that nugget about her father and Peter Rinduso. But no, reason never showed up when it should.
“There’s this little gas station that sells the best burgers. I don’t usually indulge in red meat, but it’s really hard for me to turn down a Foghat burger.” Olivia actually looked to be in a good mood. Maybe burgers did that for her.
“I thought you were a vegetarian or something.”
“No; I do, however, try to stick to a plant-based diet. Good health is important to me,” Olivia said, turning the radio back up.
“Can we listen to something that doesn’t feature a cello?”
