Chase jerked on the handle, frustration on her face. “What if I don’t want to be in that movie? What if I want everyone to stop telling me how to live my life, to stop telling me what to do, how to live . . . what if I want to quit?”
Olivia took a mental screenshot of that info to file away for later exploration.
“No one says you have to be an actress.”
Chase paused. “I thought Con hired you to get me insurable so I can do his film?”
“He did, but my job is to help you get better and become more productive. What you do once we’re through is up to you.”
She stilled. “Would you really call the cops?”
“I would have to. You are now my client and signed out of a court-ordered rehab center. My protocol is the same as the center’s. I don’t think you belong behind bars, but I follow the rules.”
Chase looked over at where Spencer stood with the woman. He held the baby in his arms, cajoling the struggling toddler while her mother tried to take a picture of the two of them. Then she looked back at Olivia. “Fine. Okay.”
Olivia nodded and then started walking back to her still-running car, grateful for Spencer distracting the mom with the phone. She felt Chase following her, thank goodness.
Spencer saw them out of the corner of his eye and handed the now-crying toddler back to her mother. The woman couldn’t hold the kid, her food, and her phone, so she slid the phone back in her pocket.
“Oh my gosh, I can’t believe that I got Sheridan’s picture with the Spencer Rome. Me and my husband watch The Hammer every week. Can you tell me if he and Marcy English are going to hook up? I mean, I think she’s perfect for the Hammer. Not Chastity. I hope they don’t put you with her. She’s—”
“Yeah, you know I can’t reveal anything. I have a gag order in my contract, and they’re serious about that stuff. But just so you know, I’m team Marcy. Don’t tell anyone that, but it’s true. Hey, the writers don’t listen to me,” he said, with an oh well shrug followed by a blinding smile. “Gotta run. Bye, Sheridan.”
He jogged over and opened the door for Chase, giving her a pointed look. Then he opened the back door of Olivia’s car and climbed inside. Leaning up between the two front seats, he looked at Olivia. “Let’s roll.”
She hadn’t been prepared for Spencer Rome to climb into her back seat, so she hesitated.
“Um, like now, lady. She’s quick with that phone,” he said, sounding not so charming and way more demanding than she’d expected from a man who wore a silver unitard and made wisecracks laced with sexual innuendo on television.
Olivia hopped in and shifted into reverse, pulling smoothly out of the spot and speeding off without breaking the posted speed limit in the parking lot.
