- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“You should meet my parents properly,” he replied. “After all, you’re giving them their first grandchild. Mother invited me, and it seemed like too good of an opportunity to miss. When I saw that necklace, I knew it would look perfect wrapped around your throat.”
His words flustered her, but she kept a neutral tone. “I see your point about getting to know your parents better, but it’s not necessary to buy me gifts. You’re not trying to woo me. If you want me to spend time with your parents, just ask.”
“Therese would love to have you there,” he continued, unfazed. “She hasn’t been to any society events before, and she’s having problems at school. It would mean a lot to her if you came.”
Aria sighed. “Are you trying to emotionally blackmail me? Using Teri to get your way?”
“The end justifies the means.”
“What end did you have in mind?” she asked. “Are your parents supposed to love me, or hate me? I expect they won’t be thrilled by the news. Have you told them?”
“No, I haven’t. They’ll be surprised, but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The ball will be quick and painless. We can break the news, give them a chance to meet you, then get you home again. You will come, won’t you?”
“Of course I’ll come,” she murmured. “I have a soft spot for you. Since we’re stuck with each other long-term, I’d like to see how we suit. I know you don’t agree, but I think you’ll be a good dad.”
“We have a lot of chemistry,” Eli replied. “But having a baby complicates things. I know my own shortcomings, and I won’t make my child live with a bad parent.” Regret was evident in his tone of voice. Misguided as he was, his decision hadn’t come easily.
Aria couldn’t listen to him any longer. It was too much. “I don’t want to argue with you. Let me know when we’re leaving for Auckland.” She disconnected the call and tried to disconnect her heart. Alas, it seemed determined to desire the unobtainable.
Late Saturday morning, Eli pulled up outside Aria’s house as she waited on the couch on the porch. She’d spent hours thinking about the upcoming trip. Eli obviously didn’t think they were compatible, but she didn’t share his view. Going home with him that day on the beach had been a bad idea, but the cat was out of the bag now, and although they were very different people, if they worked hard, they could make something of their relationship. If only he was willing. On this trip, Aria hoped to convince him to give them a chance.
