- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
She also wrote a human interest story about the whirlwind romance between the architect and the interior designer, whom had found they shared more than a passion for design. Aria envied them. When they looked into each other’s eyes, it was as if she wasn’t even in the room. She wanted a love like that more than anything.
Sometimes, she found herself thinking about Eli and the potential she saw in him. If only he were an everyday guy—–a teacher, a farmer or a mechanic—–then maybe she would be able to pursue a relationship with him. But no, he was the millionaire owner of a nationwide property development company, the sort of guy who would never be compatible with her and who could ruin her with only a couple of phone calls if he chose to. Unfortunately, no matter how many times she reminded herself why she avoided powerful men, she couldn’t help but remember how vulnerable he’d been in his relationship with Teri, and how willing he’d been to open himself to new things to make her happy. But it didn’t matter. He wasn’t part of her life anymore. The foundations were ready to be laid for his mall, and she was no longer involved.
Four weeks to the day after issuing his challenge, Derek summoned Aria and Johnny Chen into his office. Unlike last time, when she’d been fidgety and nervous, Aria felt surprisingly calm as she stood before Derek’s solid desk like a criminal in front of a jury. She’d done the best she could while keeping her integrity intact. She was proud of herself, and she couldn’t ask for more than that. If Johnny Chen had outdone her, so be it. She’d intentionally avoided the sports columns for the past month so she wouldn’t be tempted to draw comparisons.
“Mr. Chen, Miss Simons,” Derek said after his customary delay. “Welcome. The other editors and I have been very pleased with your efforts over the past four weeks. You’ve both produced excellent work, even in the absence of any significant newsworthy events.”
Aria stood tall and kept her gaze straight. Johnny shifted next to her. She wished there could be a promotion for both of them. He was a nice guy, but senior positions didn’t grow on trees.
“The reporter who has impressed us most, is, by a hair, Miss Simons.”
Aria’s head spun, and she thought she might faint. She stayed upright by the power of inertia, and nothing else.
“Congratulations, Miss Simons. You are the South Canterbury Chronicle’s new Senior Reporter.”
“Thank you so much,” she said, pressing her palms together. Her eyes welled up, but she blinked the tears back. Don’t be ridiculous. Turning to Johnny, she gave him a swift hug. “I’m sorry you missed out.”
“Don’t be,” he said, clapping her back despite his obvious disappointment. “You deserved it.”
