‘Good. This was a really great idea.’
‘I hoped so. I went to a friend’s bring-your-own-supper party and that went down a storm. It was a lot easier for me as host and people seem to enjoy bringing one dish that means something special to them. Those scallops were fabulous, by the way, even if not everyone was keen.’
‘Thanks … Have you heard from Hannah since we spoke?’
Chloe’s fingers tightened around the handle of the cafetière. ‘No.’
‘Have you thought of actually going to see her in person?’
‘I’ve thought about it, but if I’m honest, I’m afraid of the reception I’ll get. I’m scared of the look on her face and of being thrown out. I’m worried that it would only make things worse.’
‘Chloe …’ Drew’s voice was soft. ‘Enjoy this evening and tomorrow, when you’ve had the chance to think, then why not think about visiting her? I think if you could just speak to her, even if she’s angry at first – and she may well be – you might at least start a conversation again.’
‘Maybe. I just don’t know.’
‘It could be a fresh start.’ Drew brushed her fingers with his. ‘In more ways than one.’
Chloe was taken aback but decided that she should be up front with him. ‘I’m not sure I know what you mean?’
‘That tonight could be the moment for a new start with me. If you’re interested, of course.’ He hesitated, doubt clouding his eyes. ‘I’m sorry if I’m way off the mark.’
Chloe opened her mouth as the reality of his words dawned. ‘What about Caitlin? I don’t want to be the other woman in any relationship, even if it’s new, or break a couple apart.’
Drew smiled. ‘Caitlin won’t mind.’
Her estimation of Drew plummeted. She should have known he was too good to be true. He was another cheater, like Fraser. ‘Drew. How can you know that?’ she asked.
‘Because … Caitlin is over a hundred years old.’
‘What?’
‘She’s a boat, not a girlfriend. The sailing trust – with me as chief – have been thinking of buying another historic vessel for a few months so we can preserve her and take out more groups on trips. It’s been a big decision to spend that much money, but I finally signed off the contract to buy her yesterday.’ He grimaced. ‘You’re not the only one who’s been a bit economical with the truth.’
Chloe let out a squeak. ‘You … you … but why didn’t you tell us all she was a boat?’
