“Luis, not that you’re not a delight and all, but why are you here?” I asked.
He shrugged. “I was with Jory when she got your text. We had plans, but this seems fun, too.” His eyes were practically twinkling.
Well, if he thought this was fun, he was going to fit right in. “Welcome, then.” I clapped my hands, getting everyone’s attention. “Okay, here’s what’s going on. According to the pigeons, two werewolves tasered Declan and threw him into the back of a van.”
“How did they know they were werewolves?” Jory asked.
“They’re pigeons, Mom. You can’t keep secrets from pigeons.” I wiped my palms on my jeans, my hands sweaty. I’d been going on adrenaline so far and it was starting to make me shaky. “The van had lettering on the side—Whittaker Farms. We googled it—it was a small family farm up in Carnation. Doesn’t look like they’re in business anymore. We don’t know for sure that’s where they were going, but it’s all we got for now. We’re at least going to check.”
“What if he’s not at the farm?” Bay asked.
“Even if he’s not, we’re hoping he’ll be close by. I’d be able to sense him using the bond if we got close.” I let out a shaky breath. “If Eva has severed the bond already—because I think we all assume that Angus and Eva are behind Declan’s abduction—then we were hoping the ferrets were with him.”
I turned to look at Mama Ami. “We need to call the Tribunal,” I said. “Right?”
Mama Ami nodded. “And we will—as soon as we leave the city. We want them to know so they can send backup, but we don’t want them to stop us.”
Mom laughed. “That’s the thing I’ve always loved about you, Ami. You seem so sweet, but it’s a ruse, you devil.”
“I refuse to let Declan spend more time in Eva’s clutches while the UTC argues and mobilizes.” Mama Ami shrugged. “Besides, you don’t mess with my family.” She narrowed her eyes at Luis.
He grinned back at her. Challenge accepted, I guess.
My phone rang before we were out of the city, my screen flashing a number I didn’t recognize. I answered it, hoping it was Declan somehow. It wasn’t.
“Louise? This is Prisha Bhatt. I’ve been trying to get ahold of Declan, but he’s not answering his phone.”
Why was Prisha trying to talk to Declan? So much had gone on that it took me a second to remember that we’d asked her to call the UTC in Portland. “Did you get someone to check in on Zoey and Sid?”
Prisha was silent for a second and I had a sinking feeling that she was unhappy about what she was going to say. “We had someone go to their home address and their work—they’re not there. No one has heard from them. They seem to have disappeared.”
My heart sank. “Oh no.”
“Yes,” Prisha said grimly. “From what people at the brewery said, it’s very unlike both of them to not show up like this. The UTC in Portland is investigating, but we’re worried that the Campbells found them.”
