Selena opened her mouth to object, but Lord Harrowden gave her a smirk and walked away with Rebecca on his arm. She turned to see if Lady Harrowden had noticed what had happened, but the countess’s attention was drawn toward the musicians who were setting up.

It would not do to allow Rebecca to wander off in such a willful and flirtatious manner, but Selena couldn't very well leave Lady Harrowden without assistance. She would simply have to settle her in a chair, then follow Rebecca and bring her back by force. This was getting ridiculous. Not only would the girl disgrace herself, but Selena would never get another position again. Everyone would see how ill-equipped she was to instill in her charge even the most basic training in decorum.

Lady Harrowden allowed Selena to lead her over to the corner where there was a draft of fresh air sweeping across it. An older woman sat there, who Lady Harrowden greeted with real pleasure.

Selena thought this a propitious moment to slip away and retrieve her charge. "My lady, I believe I should seek out Rebecca and keep an eye on her. Will you allow me to stay near her if I come to you regularly to see if you need anything?"

Lady Harrowden just waved her hand. "Yes. Go on."

Selena walked with quick steps across the increasingly crowded room to where Rebecca was. Halfway across the floor, she caught sight of Sir Lucius, and her breath caught in her throat. Handsome even when carelessly dressed—when formally attired, Sir Lucius was a nonpareil. His head was down, revealing dark wavy hair, and he stood very close in conversation with a young woman whose back was to Selena. At the sight, she suffered a pang that was very like jealousy. You gudgeon! As if you have a chance with Sir Lucius. Besides, you are here as a companion, not a guest.

The woman turned her profile, and Selena’s lips crept up into a smile as if by their own will. It was Philippa! This was not another contender for his attention; it was his sister. Sir Lucius glanced up at that moment and caught sight of Selena’s smile. He looked her straight in the eyes as he smiled in return, gave a slight bow, then leaned back down to listen to whatever interesting tale Philippa was pouring into his ear. Within a few seconds, he glanced back at Selena. She turned quickly to hide the flash of joy that second look gave her.

Selena went to Rebecca, who was displaying all her charms under the attentions of an impeccably-dressed young gentleman. His coat was the color of bordeaux, and his cream breeches revealed a set of muscular thighs. His blond curls had a windswept look that didn’t seem to move when his head did. A Corinthian of Society if ever there was one. Selena looked around in confusion. Where had Lord Harrowden gone, and how could he leave Rebecca alone?
