Sir Lucius studied her with such warm eyes that she could not hold his gaze. “It is beyond a doubt,” he murmured. “Miss Woodsley is a trying creature. However, you know I had no choice but to stop and help, after having caused the fall, in all likelihood. I had pulled over to allow a curricle to pass and didn’t see you there.” He gave her a rueful smile. “I am sorry to have muddied your dress.”

"I have such an extensive wardrobe, one dress will hardly matter,” she said in an expressionless voice.

He laughed and shook his head. "I am quite sure you don't and beg that you will excuse me for being so careless.”

“Yes, well, if I catch my death of cold, I will expect you to escort Miss Woodsley and Lady Harrowden to the ball in my stead,” she said. “A swap I am sure at least one of them will be more than satisfied with.”

“Oh, good heavens.” He looked at her in mock horror. “I will only be getting my just deserts.”

They both turned as the door opened and George entered. “The groom is pulling up outside. Lady Harrowden, may I assist you?”

“How pleased I am to see you have found your manners, young man.” Lady Harrowden allowed Sir Lucius and his brother to take her by each arm. She was able to walk but seemed a bit stiff. They helped her into the carriage, then George turned to assist Rebecca and Sir Lucius held out his hand for Selena.

“Miss Lockhart.” He bowed and assisted Selena into the carriage with a smile that seemed just for her. It tugged at her heart to be treated so kindly, and she returned the smile, only to look to the side where Mrs. Holbeck stood.

She did not seem pleased.

Selena quickly withdrew her hand and slid into the carriage, sitting back against the squabs where she was hidden in the shadows. Mrs. Holbeck’s severe expression was a reminder that Selena did not represent an advantageous match for a baronet’s family. It was a reminder she sorely needed before she allowed her imagination to run wild.

Chapter Thirteen

Lucius had not been able to visit the accountant until after he had bestowed Lady Harrowden, Miss Lockhart, and her charge safely into their carriage. He had only told the countess of his meeting and promised that, if the accountant proved to be worthy, he would bring him to meet Lady Harrowden the next day.

At their meeting, he found that the accountant was too inexperienced to be trusted with such a delicate matter and his senior partner would not be available for a week yet, but Lucius came to Harrowden to apprise her of as much. He was shown into the drawing room to wait for Lady Harrowden, and any hopes he might have had of spending a few pleasant minutes in Miss Lockhart’s company were dashed when Miss Woodsley entered the room alone, dressed in a riding habit with red trim.
