When the dress was properly fitted, Selena eyed the bodice and wondered if it should not be altered to give more modesty. It was perhaps acceptable for a young lady out for several seasons, but it was too revealing for a young maiden not yet out.

“Shall we not go see Lady Harrowden to show her your dress?” Selena asked, her voice tinged with the concern she was feeling. “I believe she would be glad to offer her opinion.”

"Oh, I'm sure Lady Harrowden will have nothing to say about it.” Rebecca pivoted to examine the back of the dress in the looking glass. “We've already had Lord Harrowden’s word on the matter, and he said Madame Druard is known for her inventive fashions. I'm sure we shall not trouble Lady Harrowden just now. Besides, these pins are sticking into me in an uncomfortable way. Madame Druard, help me out of this now."

Selena stood by helplessly. What could she do other than grasp the child by her arm and drag her before Lady Harrowden? Perhaps she should speak with Madame Druard privately and suggest she extend the bodice to cover more—as long as the modiste would not take such a suggestion amiss. Her short acquaintance with the woman led her to believe she would.

Selena pushed down a wave of irritation that a mere girl could be so obstinate and win an argument over Selena who was three and twenty.

Selena went to see Lady Harrowden after she left Rebecca. She needed to confess to not having finished tying the bouquets and explain why. She still toyed with the idea of discussing Rebecca's attire for the ball. But to what extent should she, alone, interfere with Rebecca, and how much should she turn to the countess for help, Selena could not say.

Lady Harrowden’s pale eyes were turned toward the fireplace, and she seemed entranced by the flames. The corners of her mouth were turned down. Staring in moody contemplation at the fire appeared to be a common pastime for the widow. Perhaps it would be better if Selena could encourage her to move about a bit more. She was not so very infirm after all.

When Selena stepped farther into the room, Lady Harrowden looked up. "Where is the girl?"

Selena came and sat on the empty armchair at her side. "She has just finished with the modiste. Her dress will need to be hemmed, but it is almost finished."

"Good." Lady Harrowden gave a decisive nod. "I chose the fabric and pattern myself. So I know she will look becoming in it."

Lady Harrowden had chosen the pattern? Selena was nearly numb with relief. Thank heavens she had not complained about the inappropriateness of the dress. If Lady Harrowden thought it would do, then surely she must know best.

Still, the fact that Lord Harrowden had been in the room was another matter entirely, and she would be wrong not to bring it up. Lady Harrowden clearly did not trust her nephew, and if Rebecca were to find herself in any sort of scrape with him, it would be best if the countess knew everything now.
